Antique photos and etchings line the walls, and a turn-of-the-century Sears kit clock overlooks the front desk. Guests play chess and backgammon while sipping lemonade in the drawing room while Washington’s high society dines in the intimate restaurant. - Amenity highlights: Many guestrooms are individually appointed with Victorian furnishings, original artwork, balconies or bay windows, and decorative fireplaces. - Insider tip: Built in 1864 as townhouses for two of Washington’s leading families, the Morrison-Clark was converted in 1923 into inexpensive lodgings for members of the armed services. First Ladies beginning with Grace Coolidge presided over the facility, hosting teas there to raise money for its operations. Photographs of the soldiers and sailors who ate and slept in the facility line the walls, as well as photos of Jacqueline Kennedy, who took a special interest in the club.
