Desks are equipped with dual-voltage UK- and U.S.-style electrical outlets, and a keypad from which guests can request their butler, valet, or housekeeping services. Marble-clad bathrooms feature an additional telephone, heated towel rail, chrome fittings, and either a bath and separate shower stall or combination bath and shower.

What to expect: Less ostentatious than some 5-star hotels, the Connaught's interior is reminiscent of a country mansion, complete with classical friezes, oil paintings, marble columns, and elaborate plasterwork. A handsome oak stairway reaches from the lobby to the glass-domed ceiling six stories above. The overall mood is understated and intimate, encouraging both business and vacationers to feel at home.

• The Grill Room - With just 11 tables, this exclusive restaurant serves lunch and dinner from a menu of new European cuisine, as well as more classic dishes. It has quiet décor—olive green walls, delicate bamboo blinds, burgundy-edged crockery—and a formal air that encourages men to wear jackets.
• MENU at The Connaught - Serving modern European and English cuisine, such as carpaccio of duck with grilled asparagus and parmesan, in a designer restaurant that mixes classic Victorian décor with contemporary colors and fabrics, such as olive-colored Roman blinds with giant polka dots. A chef’s table in the kitchen may be reserved for up to ten people to enjoy a multi-course meal prepared by the head chef.
• The Connaught Bar - Resembling an English drawing room, with immaculately restored ceiling plasterwork and carved wooden fireplaces, this full bar also serves a light menu of international dishes. Open all day.
• The Red Room - With deep burgundy walls, armchairs and sofas, and heavy tied-back curtains framing views of Carlos Place, this intimate lounge has a celebrated tradition of afternoon tea. Open all day.
• The American Bar - Named during the prohibition era when many Americans crossed an ocean to enjoy alcoholic beverages legally, this bar is less formal than the rest of the hotel. Guests can relax by the fireside in leather-backed chairs beneath the gaze of trophy deer heads mounted on the oak-paneled walls. Open evenings only, and closed Sunday.

  The Connaught is located in the Mayfair district. Express trains serve both airports into the center of London, for transfers to taxis or the Underground (subway). The closest Underground station is Bond Street. Taxis are best hailed with the assistance of the doorman.

  Although there are parking facilities nearby, there are heavy fines for drivers who forget to pay new tolls for driving into central London. Traffic is difficult even for the seasoned driver. Best bet: taxis or the Underground.
